£38M Manchester United deal ANNOUNCED! OFFICIAL statement released confirming deal
Napoli have confirmed they will activate the permanent transfer of Rasmus Højlund from Manchester United this summer, with the Serie A champions set to trigger the striker’s £38 million release clause and make his move from Old Trafford official.
The 23-year-old Danish forward has enjoyed a resurgence in Italy after a challenging spell in the Premier League with United, where he managed 26 goals in 96 appearances over two seasons. United agreed to send him to Napoli on loan last summer after the club decided to reshape its attacking options, and Højlund quickly made his mark under Antonio Conte’s management.
Napoli structured the original agreement with a conditional obligation to buy — triggered if they secure qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League. With the Partenopei currently well placed in the Serie A title race and poised to finish in a Champions League spot, that requirement is now expected to be met, obligating Naples to complete the purchase.
“We have no doubts. Rasmus will stay here,” Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna said earlier in the season, underscoring the club’s commitment to the Danish striker’s longer-term future at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
“Despite the clause technically depending on Champions League qualification, Manna reiterated that Højlund is central to Napoli’s plans even if minor conditions evolve.
Højlund’s renaissance in Italy has been marked by improved consistency and efficiency in front of goal. The Dane has featured regularly in the Napoli attack throughout the 2025–26 campaign, contributing crucial goals and assists as the champions push for European football after successive strong league campaigns.
For Manchester United, the sale represents a significant moment in their ongoing squad overhaul under the club’s current sporting regime. Having signed Højlund for around £72m in 2023 amid high expectations, United endured a mixed spell for the young striker, leading to the decision to allow him to pursue a fresh chapter in Italy.
The £38m fee — payable as part of the obligatory purchase clause — will provide the Red Devils with funds to reinvest as they target reinforcements in other areas of the pitch.
The permanent transfer also brings closure to one of United’s higher-profile transfer gambles of recent years. While Højlund displayed flashes of promise during his time in the Premier League, he struggled to consistently influence games in a team undergoing tactical and personnel transitions.
Napoli’s willingness to commit long-term reflects their belief that his best football may now be emerging under Conte’s guidance.
As both clubs now prepare for the summer transfer window, attention is expected to shift to reinforcements: United on their recruitment drive, and Napoli on how Højlund will fit into their plans with Champions League football on the horizon.
