£50M announcement imminent: Carrick told Prem star should be at Man United this summer!

Former Manchester United winger Lee Sharpe has suggested that the Red Devils should have explored the possibility of signing Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa, with the England international now reportedly set to join Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal in a £50 million move.

Watkins has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most consistent and dangerous forwards in recent seasons, becoming a key figure for Aston Villa and earning recognition at international level with England.

However, reports now suggest that the striker is preparing to embark on a new challenge in Saudi Arabia, with Al Hilal closing in on a deal worth around £50 million.

The proposed move has prompted Sharpe to question why Manchester United did not make a stronger attempt to sign the 30-year-old, particularly given the club’s need for greater firepower and a proven goalscorer, Sharp said: “I think he would be an ideal buy.

“He holds the ball up well, he’s quick, he scores goals and I think he’s at the age where he would have come in and not been overawed by Manchester United and what would have been expected of him as a number nine.

“I think he would have thrived and been be a great signing and Sesko would learn so much from him.

“It looks like he has looked at Saudi for the wages towards the end of his career, but I definitely think he could have come to Man United and had success for two or three years.

“He’d have been great to have around the club and great for Sesko so I wonder whether they might have missed a trick there.”

Sharpe’s comments will inevitably fuel further debate over Manchester United’s transfer strategy. The club have often faced criticism for focusing on expensive or long-term projects while overlooking players with an established record in the Premier League.

At a reported £50 million, Watkins would still have represented a significant investment, particularly for a player approaching his thirties. However, Sharpe appears to believe that his proven ability could have justified the price.

For Aston Villa, losing Watkins would represent the departure of one of their most important attacking players. The striker has played a major role in the club’s progress in recent seasons and replacing his goals and overall contribution would be no easy task.
