Matthijs and out! Ajax confirm Arsenal’s £60 million target De Ligt is leaving this summer

Ajax coach Erik Ten Hag has told the likes of Arsenal that £60 million rated defender Matthijs De Ligt will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

De ligt is easily regarded as one of the finest young centre-backs in world football after helping Ajax get back to the top of the game, and his performances over the past few seasons has alerted a number of clubs to his potential.

Arsenal are reportedly ready to spend again in the coming transfer window and have reportedly been keeping a very close eye on the development of De Ligt, especially as boss Unai Emery needs to improve the back-line ahead of next season.

However, it seems that Bayern and Barcelona are leading the chase for the talented Dutchman and although Ten Hag has admitted De Ligt will be leaving in the summer, the Ajax boss does not know whom he will be joining at the end of the season, He told Suddeutschen Zeitung: “There’s zero chance Matthijs de Ligt is staying at Ajax. There are so many clubs interested in him.

“He will leave us this summer, but I don’t know whether he’ll join Bayern or Barcelona.”

Now it is easy to see why De Ligt is a man in demand and it is also easy to see why Ajax have given up on trying to keep hold of the young man, especially as he will bring £60 million plus to the Dutch club in the next few months, which they can invest with.

However, it is not a forgone conclusion that De Ligt will be signing for Bayern or Barcelona, so Arsenal just need to keep a close eye on how transfer talks progress, as they have the financial power to swoop in and tempt him to the Premier League.

The English game is the best in world football and although the European giants are a tempting offer, all players want to test themselves in the Premier League and De Ligt also has his eyes on a potential move to England.

It will be interesting to see just where he ends up, as he would be a welcome addition to the Premier League, and be a huge signing for the back-line of Arsenal.
