Alderweireld has message for chasing Man United after Tottenham news
Manchester United target Toby Alderweireld has said he is happy with the clause which will keep him at Tottenham for another year.
Alderweireld is ragarded as one of the best defenders in the Premier League right now, and his leadership at the back has helped Tottenham become one of the best defensive sides in the English top flight, but there has been alot of speculation that he will be leaving.
It has been claimed that he has asked for a new deal that Spurs are not prepared to offer, as it would exceed their wage budget, and speculaion suggested that Spurs would sell this month if the right amount of money was offered.
United, along with the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal have all been linked with possible moves for Alderweireld, but Spurs have now decided to keep hold and activate a clause in his contract which keeps him at the club for another season.
And despite not signing a new long-term deal, Alderweireld has admitted he is happy with the extension, telling the Sky Sports website: “I’m very happy to stay another year. It was (a clause) in my contract and I’m happy Spurs gave me the confidence to stay another year.
“I’m only focused on things on the pitch. People can see every time I play that I give 100 per cent for this club – this is what I keep doing every time I play.”
Could Tottenham still sell Alderweireld?
Spurs have ativated the clause in hope they can convince Alderweireld to lower his demands and possibly sign a new contract at the club. But if they cannot do that by the end of the season and a club like United offer the £50 million they want, then Chairman Daniel Levy will open talks about a potential deal.
They do not want to lose a player like Alderweireld for nothing, as he could still command a big fee.
