boss urged to make Alderweireld- Koulibaly move, Pogba talks, Militao-United over Reds? in Liverpool, Man United Monday news and gossip
Here is the daily roundup of Liverpool and Manchester United news and gossip from icfootballnews.
Arsenal legend Paul Merson has claimed Manchester United should be targeting Toby Alderweireld and Kalidou Koulibaly.
Despite winning their last seven matches under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, there are a few areas of the pitch that United need to improve on and the back-line is an area that needs to be improved, as the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly have not been good enough this season.
And United have been linked with the likes of Harry Maguire, Kostas Manolas and Milan Skriniar over the past few months, but Merson has claimed that United should be focusing on the world class Alderweireld or Koulibaly, who have also been linked with moves.
Alderweireld has not signed a new contract at Tottenham and all indications suggest he will leave in the summer transfer window, especially since he has a £25 million release clause in his contract, while Koulibaly is one of the best defenders in Europe right now, and could leave with all the racism still in the Italian game.
Merson was quoted on the Sky Sports website: “Defensively they are not good enough. I dread to think what the score will be against PSG in the Champions League next month. They need defenders.
“If it were not for bad finishing by Tottenham then it could have been any score.
“Toby Alderweireld and Kalidou Koulibaly are two players United should be targeting. Those two are the best two centre-backs in the world, along with Thiago Silva. Alderweireld probably could be purchased at a reasonable price, too. It would be a smart move especially as it would weaken Tottenham immensely.”
Transfer guru Duncan Castles has claimed Manchester United will beat Liverpool to the signing of Eder Militao.
The Brazilian only joined Porto last summer but has excelled in the Super League and his performances have caught the attentions of both United and Liverpool.
Despite having the best defensive record in the Premier League, Liverpool are short on depth at the back and one or two serious injuries would leave them in big issues and not the right cover.
United on the other-hand need to improve the back-line for the sake of their season, they have not been good enough over the past few months and although they have had a good run under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, their problems have not been sorted.
And Castles has explained why he is confident United will do a deal for the 21-year-old.
“They like his speed, they like the simplicity of his game, they like his physique and it seems clear that he won’t be much longer at Porto,” he told the Transfer Window Podcast.
“If it doesn’t happen in this window, I would expect it to happen in the summer for sure barring a very bad injury on the part of the player.
“He’s a player who’s been scouted by top clubs in Europe last summer, but Porto had been prepared to take him out of Sao Paolo and obviously the top clubs have continued to scout him.
“They’re now watching him play Champions League players and play for Porto at the top of the Portuguese League.
“And they like even more what they see now he’s in Europe, he’s taken that step, he’s entered that adaptation process which can be quite difficult for South Americans.”
Reports have claimed Paul Pogba is ready to hold talks with Manchester United over a contract extension.
Pogba has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons since his move to Old Trafford, as he simply couldnt put in the kind of performances to keep ex-boss Jose Mourinho happy, with the Portuguese coach constantly hitting out at the Frenchman.
However, since the arrival of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the Frenchman has looked a totally different player and has been instrumential in helping the Red Devils legend win his opening seven matches as United boss.
And now, after reports David De Gea, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are all set to sign new deals, Pogba is reportedly ready to sit down and discuss a new contract with the club.
An Old Trafford source told The Sun: “Pogba’s agent is ready to end the problems he has had with the club over the last few months.
“He wasn’t over much towards the end of last year. There was a big breakdown of relationships while Mourinho was in charge.
“Raiola wants to talk about his clients ongoing future when all the January business is concluded, which won’t be too much.
“There were talks over whether he would go, but there is no chance of that. He looks like he’s the happiest he has been in a long time.”
