Emery ditch Luiz and get Arsenal deal wrapped up for one of Premier Leagues best Alderweireld!
Arsenal SHOULD make a move to sign Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld during the January transfer window.
Alderweireld is regarded as one of the finest leaders in Europe right now and has been a big reason why Spurs have been so good under the guidance of Mauricio Pochettino over the past few seasons.
But despite many months of contract talks, Alderweireld has been unable to agree a new contract at Spurs, with many reports suggesting Tottenham Chairman Daniel Levy is unwilling to break the clubs strict wage policy.
That has led to a lot of speculation in the media that the likes of Arsenal could make a move for Alderweireld during the summer window, as they sought to bolster their back-line issues, but Unai Emery made the strange decision to sign David Luiz from Chelsea instead.
Luiz has already shown the Gunners fans just why he is not good enough to slot into that Arsenal back-line any longer, and he will need to be replaced as he will cost the club too many points over the course of the season.
The gunners let a two-goal lead slip at the weekend against Watford, and once again, Luiz managed to give away another penalty and three points for Unai Emery, who is now under intense pressure to get back into winning ways.
And one player they should try and sign is Alderweireld.
It’s remarkable that nobody triggered Alderweireld’s paltry £25m release clause in the summer, especially after the stylish stopper helped Spurs record another top-four finish and reach a surprise Champions League final for the first time in 2018/19, but is set to leave on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of this season.
Alderweireld is rarely caught out of position and is equally comfortable playing in a back three or back four, and he’s a terrific passer too, something Emery loves in his defenders.
He is a winner, leader and proven Premier League player and the fact that they may be able to land him for cheap means he would and could be a great January buy.
Emery needs to be more wise with the type of defenders he buys, but is there a better option than Alderweireld?
