Mikel Arteta backed to wrap up Arsenal transfer deal ‘for top class defender’

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has tipped Mikel Arteta to sign a top class defender this month.

This is Arteta’s first transfer window as boss of the Arsenal and he has been linked with all sorts of players over the past few weeks, with many believing that he will be backed if he wants to sign a few players this month.

But Arsenal have once again been poor at the back, as Sokratis and David Luiz are not the partnership to help the side get back inside the top four, meaning that Arteta will need to spend some serious money in order to improve this back-line.

Carragher doesn’t think that Arteta will be able to fiddle around with personnel too much now, but he expects the former Everton midfielder to find a ‘top class’ defender in a few months.

“There is not much he can do to reshape the squad in mid-season,” Carragher told the Telegraph.

“But I will be shocked if Arsenal’s back four does not have different personnel at the start of next year.

“Arteta will be looking forward to getting a close look at William Saliba, the highly-rated 18-year-old centre-back on loan at St Etienne.

“He will want another top class defender.

“I do not expect Soktratis and Luiz to be symbols of the Arteta era because of their age and their unsuitability to his style.

“They currently represent why Arsenal got into the mess they did.

“When Arteta played for Arsenal, they were a skilful but timid side.

“The team he took over had allowed the timidity to overshadow any of the skill it possessed.

“Nine years after first joining as a player, Arteta may finally bring the combination of silk and steel Arsenal have lacked for too long.”

Look, it is no secret that Arteta needs to improve this back-line and the Gunners hiearchy need to give him the money he needs, otherwise Arteta will struggle to get this Arsenal side back inside the top six, nevermind the top four.
