£300k-a-week star backed to complete astonishing move to Liverpool

Former Premier League midfielder Andy Townsend has backed the possibility of Liverpool making a sensational move to bring Trent Alexander-Arnold back to Anfield this summer amid growing speculation surrounding the England international’s future at Real Madrid.

Alexander-Arnold completed a high-profile move to the Spanish giants after ending his long association with Liverpool, where he developed from an academy prospect into one of the world’s most influential attacking full-backs. However, reports suggest his position at the Santiago Bernabeu could now face increased competition following Real Madrid’s decision to sign Denzel Dumfries.

New Real Madrid head coach Jose Mourinho is understood to have sanctioned the arrival of the Inter Milan defender as he looks to strengthen his squad and create greater competition across his defensive options. The signing has raised questions over whether Alexander-Arnold remains an automatic starter under the Portuguese manager.

Townsend believes Liverpool should monitor the situation closely and would welcome the opportunity to see the academy graduate return to Merseyside

“First and foremost, purely as a player, if he came back to LIVERPOOL, would he improve them? One hundred per cent, yes,” he said.”[Jeremie] Frimpong one, as a right back, I’ve not really got.

“It’s so important nowadays with these full-backs being such an important part of a team’s attacking intentions.

“If you can’t deliver anything half decent when you get into a good area, and from what I’ve seen of him so far, I’ve not really seen that final delivery, which Trent can do in his sleep.

‘So, I think he absolutely would improve them. The question is how the club would feel about it. That’s going to be a difficult pill probably for some Liverpool fans to swallow.”

LIVERPOOL, meanwhile, have continued to reshape their squad under their new manager and remain keen to maintain a competitive squad capable of challenging for major honours. Bringing Alexander-Arnold back would represent a major statement, although any potential deal would likely be complicated by his contract situation and Real Madrid’s valuation.

There is currently no indication that Liverpool have made an official approach, but Townsend’s comments have sparked debate among supporters about whether a return could become a realistic possibility
