Chelsea coach reveals Frenchman Arreola talks over move to Stamford Bridge

Christophe Lollichon has admitted that Paris Saint-Germain shot-stopper Alphonse Areola wanted to sign for Chelsea in the summer.

Chelsea were linked with a number of possible stoppers in the summer as they seeked replacements for Thibaut Courtois, who eventually signed for Spanish giants Real Madrid.

And the impressive Areola, who is now battling Gianluigi Buffon for the number one spot, was high up on the shopping list before Chelsea settled for Spanish ace Kepa.

Now Chelsea coach Lollichon has revealed that Arreola would have made the move had a deal been struck.

“We had a lot of discussions this summer, in a very reasoned way,” he told French daily Le Figaro.

“He wanted to come here, but the final decision was not my responsibility.

“It would have been a pleasure working with him.”

Areola came through the youth ranks at PSG, having loan spells at Lens, Bastia and Villarreal, before establishing himself at the Parc des Princes.

But he has the big task of keeping out the world’s best stopper, as Buffon will not settle for time on the bench.

Here is what we think

So far Kepa has made a solid to life in the Premier league and looks very assured for a man that is only 23-years of age.

So it doesn’t matter if Arreola wanted a move to Chelsea, as Kepa will be the clubs stopper for the next few years after signing a big seven-year contract.

However, would Arreola be a better buy than the Spaniard? Not for the kind of money that PSG were asking for.
