Arsenal to upset Spurs and land perfect £25 million target as star heads for summer exit?
Arsenal should and could make a move for Tottenham star Toby Alderweireld, when Laurent Koscielny leaves the club.
Alderweireld is regarded as one of the finest leaders in Europe right now and has been a big reason why Spurs have been so good under the guidance of Mauricio Pochettino over the past few seasons.
But despite many months of contract talks, Alderweireld has been unable to agree a new contract at Spurs, with many reports suggesting Tottenham Chairman Daniel Levy is unwilling to break the clubs strict wage policy.
That has led to a lot of speculation in the media that the likes of Arsenal could make a move for Alderweireld in the summer window, as they seek to bolster their back-line issues.
And after long-serving Koscielny opened the door to a possible summer move after French giants Bordeaux reportedly made a three-year contract offer, Arsenal could ramp up their interest in Alderweireld.
Shock reports claimed Arsenal were considering a move for Alderweireld, especially as his £25 million price tag was well within their £45 million transfer kitty this summer.
However, joining Tottenham’s fierce rivals would not go down well with the club’s fans, especially as he would be the first player to move from Tottenham to Arsenal since Sol Campbell’s controversial switch in 2001.
Gunners boss Unai Emery spent over £70 million trying to improve the back-line last summer, but there are big issues at the back for Arsenal and that is the main reason why they failed to get back into a top four spot.
Losing Alderweireld for a bargain fee this summer will be a huge blow for Spurs as many fans believe he is the clubs best centre-half, but to lose him to Arsenal would be an even bigger blow.
Arsenal have a habit of persuading Tottenham players to make the short move across London, and they are more willing to offer Alderweireld the kind of wages that he is reportedly seeking.
He is just the type of leader that Spurs cant afford to lose, but Arsenal would love to have as their back-line is simply not good enough.
