Arsenal sent transfer message over possible deal for ex-Chelsea star Cahill
Arsenal have been told that they should have made a move to sign former Chelsea defender Gary Cahill in the summer.
The Gunners done a lot of wonderful business during the transfer window that has got many fans excited about the prospect this season of challenging for more than just a top four spot and Champions League next season.
But there is one man that could have made the move to the Emirates, and that was Cahill, who was linked with a move to Arsenal after deciding to leave Chelsea at the end of last season.
Arsenal were looking to strengthen their options in central defence and had a bid rejected for RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano before signing David Luiz in an £8 million deal from Chelsea.
But Holloway feels Cahill, who ended up joining Crystal Palace, would have been an excellent acquisition for the Gunners.
‘I would have fancied Cahill,’ Holloway said on The Debate.
‘I know Cahill’s gone to Palace but if you had David Luiz and Cahill.’
Arsenal have some defensive issues that need to be sorted out in the coming windows as the signings of Luiz, Kieran Tierney and William Saliba is not enough to make a serious challenge for that Premier League title.
But Cahill is now past his best and Arsenal not making a move to try and acquire his services during the transfer window was probably a smart move, especially as he would have just been a back-up, collecting a nice big wage on the bench.
Emery knows what players will improve the squad and he believes that this current side is good enough to do special things this season, especially with the attack that he has now accumulated at the Emirates.
But one or two big named defenders would certainly make a difference in January or next season, and it would send a serious statement to the rest of the premier League that Arsenal are once again ready to become Champions of England.
