Arsenal take spending over £200 million after clinching £39 million signing

Arsenal have taken their summer spending spree beyond £200million after clinching a £39m deal for Ajax defender Jurrien Timber,

The 22-year-old Dutch international will join £105million Declan Rice and £65million Kai Havertz at the Emirates as part of Mikel Arteta’s major overhaul ahead of next season’s return to the Champions League.

The agreement for Timber was reached just hours after ARSENAL accepted West Ham’s demands to pay their club record fee for Rice within two years.

And it means the Gunners have now spent a staggering £627million on new signings in the past three years.

And already the Dutch defender is looking to get into Mikel Arteta’s good books, as De Telegraaf claim he reported back to Ajax’s De Toekomst training ground on Friday to build his fitness for the season ahead.

The Gunners’ stars don’t have to report back to preseason training until July 10, but Timber wants a head start as he wants to impress his new boss going into the new season.

However – amid all the speculation – Marco Van Basten has told the Dutchman that he should not make that move to Arsenal this summer

The AC Milan legend told him: “You have only been playing at Ajax for just three years. How old are you now? Twenty-one or just turned 22? You have to be careful that you don’t become a reserve player there.

“I would have waited to get more experience. Another year at Ajax would have suited you. You shouldn’t go somewhere just to participate.

‘You should go to a club where you will be regarded as a leader and a dominant figure in the team. Everyone in the dressing room at your new club will look at you and say ‘go on, show us what you can do.’

“And if your fellow players don’t feel you can really improve the team, then they’re all against you. You will be considered an intruder.”
