£67 million midfielder De Jong makes stunning Arsenal claim after completing five-year summer move
Former Ajax star Frenkie de Jong thought he would follow in the footsteps of Marc Overmars by playing for Arsenal before joining Barcelona.
After helping Ajax become one of the most talked about side in Europe last season, helping the Dutch giants regain the League title and helping the club reach the Champions League semi-finals, a number of first team players are expected to depart the club this summer.
But one name that has already left the club is that of 22-year old midfielder De Jong, who signed a five-year contract at the Nou Camp after Barcelona paid Ajax £67million for his signature.
The midfielder was seen as the catalyst for all the fine performances of the Dutch side and is tipped tp be the perfect replacement for Sergio Busquets or Ivan Rakitic at the club.
But upon agreeing a move to Barcelona, he has admitted that he didn’t envisage it happening this way, as he saw himself following Overmars and playing for the Arsenal.
“In my mind I have had the following list for a long time: Ajax-Arsenal-Barcelona, call it the Marc Overmars route,” De Jong told Voetbal International.
“But then again, if you can go directly to Barcelona, then you are right where you want to be. Faster than you ever dared to dream.”
De Jong is a man that is on the cusp of becoming one of the best midfielders in the game and he will certainly move up a few levels at Barcelona, but Arsenal would have been a great move for the lad.
The Gunners paly the kind of football that De Jong enjoys and they are in need of a player like him in the centre of the park, so it is a shame that they misses out as he could have been a great signing.
But maybe in a few years Arsenal may get a chance to get a deal done, especially if De Jong fails to impress at the Camp Nou.
