World class bargain on the horizon!? Arsenal can seal Mertens deal as Napoli ‘forced to sell’ in Winter window
Reports have claimed Arsenal may be able to sign long-term transfer target Dries Mertens in the January window.
Despite spending some serious money during the summer transfer window, Gunners boss Unai Emery has come under intense criticism for his transfer decisions and lack of results at the Emirates, meaning that he will need to buy to keep his job until the end of the season.
That means that there has been some reports in the media suggesting that he will be handed a transfer kitty in the January window in order to improve on his current side, with the likes of Mertens on the shopping list of the Spaniard.
Napoli sit seventh in the Serie A table having won just five of their opening 12 matches and could be forced to sell their players as a result, and Italian news outlet Ilmattino argue Napoli could be forced to sell their players for less than their asking prices after such a poor start.
And the report goes on to say that Mertens will be allowed to negotiate with clubs in January over a potential free move in the summer, with Arsenal ready to try and nail down a transfer deal for a small fee.
Look, it is the same thing every season, Arsenal have been linked with some of the games best players, there is alot of speculation, maybe even talks, but in the end the Gunners hierarchy decide to move on as they want to save a bit of money.
Mertens is not a player that Arsenal need as they already have a world class attack, but he is a leader, a winner and someone that could make an impact on the side heading into the second half of the season.
We are not saying that Arsenal should make a move for the Belgian, but if they want to get back challenging for things, then he is the type of player that they need to be trying to sign if the chance arises.
