Arsenal Friday! Mertesacker makes Wenger claim, Cech has contract revelation and Sanhheli wants to sign maestro
Gunners legend Per Mertesacker admits Arsenal’s players were at fault for Arsene Wenger’s decision to quit the club.
Wenger finally ended his love affair with the club at the end of last season after 22-years with the club that brought ten trophies, a new stadium and financial security, and he was eventually replaced by Spaniard Unai Emery.
It came after the Frenchman guided the Gunners to the semi-finals of the Europa League and sixth in the Premier League, their lowest finish in the top-flight under Wenger.
And Mertesacker believes Arsenal’s players should take the blame for not being able to keep Wenger at the club.
When asked about Wenger’s decision to leave the club, Mertesacker told Spox: ‘That was very surprising for all of us.
‘He came into the meeting room and said that together with the bosses he had decided to quit the end of the season. ‘It was a sad moment because I felt like I’d done my part.
‘His departure was the fault of us players because we had many opportunities to get better results.
And Arsenal star Petr Cech has revealed that he has not received a new contract offer from the club, despite starting the opening five games of the season.
Cech had a very indifferent season under Arsene Wenger last season and looked to be heading for some time on the bench after Unai Emery splashed out in the summer to sign Bernd Leno from Bayer Leverkusen for £22 million.
Many believed that the German would show up at the Emirates and become the clubs number one, especially since Cech is coming to the end of his playing days, but that has not been the case and Leno has had to watch from the bench as the Czech republic ace continues to start for Emery.
But Cech has revealed that he has not been offered a new contract to stay at the Emirates, despite the fact he is out of contract at the end of the season.
He said: “I’m in the last year of the contract so I guess it depends on my performances, the way I play and the way I stay fit throughout the season.
“Then we’ll see what happens next.”
And finally, new head of football Raul Sanllehi wants to make Sevilla’s Ever Banega his first Arsenal signing in January.
With Gunners boss Unai Emery trying to put his own spin on the team and freshen up the squad, he has already acquired the services of Bernd Leno, Sokratis, Stephen Lichsteiner, Matero Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira during transfer window.
But with constant rumours midfielder Aaron Ramsey will depart the club at the end of the season, as he simply cannot agree a new contract at the club, new head of football Raul Sanllehi wants to make Sevilla’s Ever Banega his first signing according to the Sun website.
Banega has been constantly linked with a move to the Emirates as Emery is keen to be reunited with a player that brought so much success to his Sevilla days.
The 29-year-old’s pedigree is well-established having played for Boca Juniors, Valencia and Sevilla and his high-energy style could work well for Emery at the Emirates Stadium.
