Arsenal get huge transfer message, Mourinho makes Gunners deal claim, Arsenal deal backed by former Gunner Petit

Here is a roundup of the latest Arsenal news from icfootballnews.

Former Arsenal hero Nigel Winterburn has claimed that Manchester United target and Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho would have been a terrific signing for the club during the summer.

Coutinho made a name for himself at Liverpool as one of the best creative midfielders in the game and Barcelona were determined to acquire his services as the long-term replacement for Andreas Iniesta.

However, his move to the Camp Nou has not gone down as well as many had hoped and after the arrival of Antoine Griezmann, he has fallen well down the pecking order, meaning the likes of United are interested in a potential deal.

But there was some shock transfer talk on deadline day that the Gunners made a last-ditched attempt to bring him back to the Premier League on a loan-basis, but they couldn’t strike a deal as reports suggested that Barcelona wanted £40 million to loan the Brazilian.

However, Arsenal hero Winterburn says the Gunners were never likely to sign the former Liverpool ace, but he would have bee a great signing for the club.

“I don’t consider Arsenal missing out on Coutinho as a blow because I don’t think that it was ever realistic,” he told SportingBet.

“Some of the figures that were bandied about, I’ve read that the deal could be worth up to £40 million, would have been an incredible investment from Arsenal for a loan deal and something that just cannot happen.

“He’s a terrific player, I think he would enhance most squads, but I don’t see it as a missed opportunity, because I was never convinced it was an option.”

Former Chelsea and Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has backed Frank Lampard’s decision to let David Luiz make the shock move to the Emirates.

Luiz shocked the world on transfer deadline day when he made the move across London to sign for Arsenal after it emerged that Unai Emery made a last-ditched attempt to prise him away from Stamford Bridge, despite the fact that he has only recently signed a new contract with the Blues.

Chelsea were unable to replace the Brazilian star during the summer transfer window as they are still in this transfer ban, and there are many out there that believe that Lampard will regret letting one of his most experienced defenders leave the club on deadline day.

But Pettit, who represented both clubs during his playing days, says Lampard made the right decision, telling the Metro website: ‘The fact that David Luiz left the club the way he did tells me that Lampard told him he was not going to feature regularly in his team,”

‘Luiz is 32 years old, and Lampard knows what he’s like as a player and was fine with showing him the door – I don’t think that’s the issue here.

‘For me, it should have been done earlier and that’s the problem. I’m not very happy seeing players moving clubs when the competitions are starting, it just causes trouble.

‘But for me, Lampard sent a clear message to Luiz by showing him the door, that he is not his priority, so I doubt he regrets his decision.’

Former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has claimed that David Luiz will actually perform much better at Arsenal then he managed at Chelsea.

Luiz shocked the world on transfer deadline day when he made the move across London to sign for Arsenal after it emerged that Unai Emery made a last-ditched attempt to prise him away from Stamford Bridge, despite the fact that he has only recently signed a new contract with the Blues.

But despite the critics that Luiz and Arsenal have both run into since the shock transfer deal, Mourinho believes a change of clubs will focus the 32-year-old’s mind and reckons it will turn out to be a good move for him and Arsenal.

“David is a player [Unai Emery, his former Paris Saint-Germain manager] knows well,” Mourinho recently said on Sky Sports.

“He knows what David can give and what David cannot give.

“I think we all know the good qualities of David and where he can improve teams.

“And I think we all know, probably I know a little bit better because I’ve coached him, that sometimes he makes mistakes, but he makes these mistakes especially when his concentration levels are low.

“And when you change to a new club and you have something to prove, I think it’s a good move for him.

“At this moment of his career to get this opportunity of a late move and stay in the Premier League at the highest level, for David, it’s a fantastic move.’
