Arsenal Saturday! Keown shocked, Barella deal, Merson stuns fans, Emery ready to complete Herrera deal
Here is the latest headlines, gossip and transfer news from the world of Arsenal.
Gunners legend Martin Keown has admitted his surprise at Arsenal’s decision to let Liverpool and Manchester United target Aaron Ramsey leave for nothing at the end of the season.
After spending over ten years at the Emirates, becoming an integral player under Arsene Wenger, winning three FA Cup titles and making well over 300 appearances for the club, the Arsenal hierarchy finally came to the conclusion this season that Ramsey was no longer part of their plans for the future and have agreed to let him leave for free at the end of the season.
There is no official reason being released by the club which states just why they stopped all negotiations, but speculation in the media suggest that it is because Ramsey wanted a contract close to the £300,000-a-week one Mesut Ozil currently receives, which is nowhere near the deal the Gunners were prepared to offer.
And that has now led to much speculation that both United and Liverpool will swoop in at the end of the season, possibly in the January window if the price is right, and take him to their respective clubs.
Now legend Keown has admitted he is staggered that a contract was not offered by Arsenal, telling the Daily Mail website: ‘From the club’s point of view, they have made a decision and are not letting themselves be dictated to by a player. If they wanted to keep him, they surely would have left the door open and tried to find a solution financially.
‘I expect Ramsey to continue to be 100 per cent committed to the cause. He is a fantastic professional who will give everything to the football club.
‘But I do find it staggering that the contract offer has been removed. When you think about how much it will cost to replace a player like Ramsey, it is astonishing that he will be allowed to leave.
The club must have already identified targets who they feel represent better value for money. In an interview at the weekend, Raul Sanllehi – Arsenal’s head of football – said that they started identifying last summer’s signings in February and March.
‘At that time, Arsene Wenger was still in charge. Unai Emery had not been appointed. Who is making the decisions on transfers? And how privy is the manager to these decisions?’ (Read full article)
Gunners legend Paul Merson has claimed Liverpool will tear Arsenal to shreds when the two sides meet in this weekend’s big Premier League fixture.
After losing their opening two games of the season, Arsenal have gone on to win 11 of their last 12 games under new boss Unai Emery and many Gunners fans are now looking towards challenging for a Premier League title, and not just a top four spot and Champions League football.
But despite their impressive winning streak, and despite the fact they have been scoring goals for fun, many in the media have not been too impressed with the performances of the Gunners and have been heavily critical of their poor defensive back-line, which has gotten away with some big decisions over the weeks.
Liverpool, who are joint-top of the Premier League and one of the favourites for the Premier League title this season, are looking to expose that weakness and add to their points tally this season and let the impressive front three of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane loose on the Gunners back-line.
And Merson has claimed that Jurgen Klopp’s men will tear the Gunners apart, stating: ‘I can’t see anything but a Liverpool win. I think this is the day Arsenal show some big cracks. I just think the defence is terrible, all over the place, and no different to what it was before.
‘If Hector Bellerin is injured, you’re talking about Granit Xhaka at left-back, a central midfield player, and Stephan Lichtsteiner at right-back, who has been a good player but is nearly 35 now.
‘How many 35-year-old’s are there in the Premier League? We saw Leicester rip Arsenal to shreds for 30 minutes; they scored, Harry Maguire missed a sitter, they had a stonewall penalty turned down.
‘Leicester’s front three aren’t even in the same class as Liverpool’s. I just cannot see how Arsenal will live with them.
‘People will say: ‘Oh Arsenal will score goals…’ but Liverpool’s defence has been superb ‘I watched Arsenal win 11 games on the trot, and they could have easily lost four of them, let alone drawn them.’ (Read full article)
Cagliari will not stand in the way of Arsenal target Nicolo Barella leaving the club when the January transfer window opens up, as the Gunners seek a replacement for Aaron Ramsey.
Ramsey, who has been greedy and ask for a wage that he does not deserve, is now set to leave the club at the end of the season after failing to agree terms on a new contract with a whole host of clubs interested in trying to secure his signature for nothing.
The Gunners informed the Welshman last week their reasons for stopping all negotiations over a new contract, and have now reportedly started the process of lining up a number of alternatives to come in during the January transfer window and fill the void that will be left by Ramsey.
And according to the TalkSport website, they have reportedly turned their attentions too Barella, who is on the radar of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side.
Klopp has been keeping a close eye on the development of Barella over the last few months and is keen to add him to the squad in hope he will improve the side and push on from their great Premier League start to the new season.
But with Ramsey now officially leaving, Arsenal are now ready to outbid their Premier League rivals and bring the talented midfielder to the Premier League in a deal that could be worth around £35 million, which is not a lot of money for the talented midfielder.
And even though Cagliari do not want to lose one of their best players, the Gunners will be able to complete a possible deal this winter after the Italian clubs owner Tommaso Giulini recently admitted they will not stand in the way of the Gunners trying to complete a deal in January.
He was quoted on the TalkSport website:“Nicolo finally has a coach (Rolando Maran), who can give him a lot. If he stayed then I’d be the happiest man in the world, but it’s equally clear that the lad could have the ambition of playing in the Champions League.” (Read full article)
Reports have now claimed Arsenal are now keen on landing Porto midfielder Hector Herrera during the January transfer window, as a replacement for Aaron Ramsey.
Despite the fact Unai Emery splashed out £70 million in the summer transfer window to acquire a number of new players, the Spaniard is still looking to improve his squad in the coming winter window, as he looks to push on from the solid start his Arsenal side have made to the Premier League season.
The signings of Bernd Leno, Sokratis and Stephen Lichsteiner have all improved the back-line while the acquisition on Lucas Torreira will give protection just ahead, a position which has become a real issue for the Gunners over the last few seasons.
And now the TalkSport website has claimed that they have switched their attentions to 28-year old Herrera, who has been the mainstay of Porto’s midfield for the past five seasons and helped them to Primeira Liga glory last term.
It is stated that Porto have already rejected several offers made for Herrera, but the player is aware of the interest in him and wants to leave. Porto have attempted to tie him down to a new contract, but Herrera is said to have rejected an extension on three separate occasions.
And he also caught the eye during Mexico’s stay at the World Cup in Russia, helping his National side to the knockout stages with some standout performances. (Read full article)
