Trio on way? Gunners shocked as Emery told to ditch and sell £140 million worth of Arsenal talent
Former Arsenal striker Charlie Nicholas believes the Gunners should raise funds this summer by selling Mesut Ozil, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Lucas Torreira.
Reports all over the media in the past few weeks have suggested that Gunners boss Unai Emery will only be handed a measly £45 million to splash on new players in the coming transfer window.
The Spaniard is expected to improve the squad enough to be challenging for the top-four spots and a number of trophies with funds that most big players cost these days.
But Nicolas has urged his former club to offload Ozil Mkhitaryan and Torreira to raise a number of funds.
The Uruguayan, who joined the Gunners from Sampdoria for £25m last summer, said this week that he would like to return to Italy soon, with some reports suggesting AC Milan are willing to splash close to £60 million to secure a deal.
Ozil has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons over the past 12 months and there is a feeling around the club that he could be sold if the right offer arrives.
And Mkhitaryan has been hit and miss at the Emirates since his move from Manchester United and although he can be brilliant at times, he is not the type of player that Emery likes to have in his squads.
He said on the TalkSport website: “Who can they get out of the door? If you can get the right offer for Mesut Ozil you’d sell.
“Mkhitaryan can go and you want to keep Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette.
“Torreira seems to be interested in going back to Italy. If you can get the right money: take it.”
Emery needs a lot more money than the £45 million to carry on building the type of squad that he needs, but surely Arsenal will not agree to let the trio leave this summer.
The Gunners prefer to keep hold of players, even if they want to leave and it would be a shock to see just one of the players leave, not three.
