Arsenal transfer news: Arteta ready to meet asking price after Gunners make offer to sign defender Smalling?

Arsenal are prepared to pay Manchester United’s £25 million asking price for Chris Smalling, but is he the right man?

Mikel Arteta may have delved into that transfer kitty during the January transfer window in order to bring in the likes of Cedrik Soares and Pablo Mari, but there is still a feeling around the media that he will be desperate to add another defender to that back-line.

There is still some doubt about the qualities of David Luiz and Shkodran Maustafi, while there is also a feeling that Sokratis may leave the club if he cannot get back into the habit of playing in the Premier League on a weekly basis in that Arsenal back-line, leading to reports on a move for Smalling.

Smalling has been in fine form since he moved to Italy on-loan with AS Roma and he seems to have revived his career at the Italian giants after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer felt that he was surplus-to-requirements at Old Trafford last season, and several top European sides have now begun to consider moves for the 30-year-old.

Now Italian publication Corriere dello Sport have claimed that Arsenal are ready to meet the asking price that United have set for the former England International, and have already made a bid to try and acquire his services in the summer window.

Smalling has the Premier League experience at the top level of English football and has the experience to add something to this Gunners side if they were to make a move and try to acquire his signature ahead of London rivals Tottenham.

The Gunners are expected to sign a few more players in the next transfer window and Smalling could become the latest player to move between Manchester United and Arsenal, despite the fact that Arsenal need to delve into the kitty and LAND A WORLD CLASS DEFENDER!

Too many times over the summers have Arsenal improved the side with players that do not make much a difference to the side, and we believe that Smalling fits into that mould, despite his decent form over in Italy.

He has never fulfilled his potential and would not improve this Arsenal side.
