Fresh reports have emerged which have claimed Arsenal ‘are very close’ to announcing their first summer deal, with Borussia Dortmund star Sokratis set to join up.
The Gunners, who are expected to announce the arrival of Mikel Arteta in the coming days’ are also looking to get their transfer deals done before the world cup, as market value for their top targets will rise dramatically.
And Sven Mislintat, Arsenal’s new head of recruitment, has made the signing of Sokratis one of his top summer priorities, with the Gunners in desperate need of improving their back-line.
And according to German website Bild the 29-year-old Greek international is set to sign a two-year deal with the Gunners as Dortmund prepare to target Abdou Diallo as his replacement.
It is said Sokratis would cost around £17m, which is well within the £100 million transfer kitty the potential new boss will be receiving when he takes over from Wenger.
Sokratis has emerged as one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga and will add some leadership to the squad that will be missing Laurent Koscielny for at least half of next season.
And with the Gunners keen to get back into the habit of playing Champions League football, and they are hoping Sokratis will be just one of a number of new faces that will be arriving.
