Arsenal news: Champions warned as big Premier League claim made
Graeme Souness has backed Arsenal to be the closest challengers to Manchester City again next season.
The Gunners were sitting top of that Premier League table for most of the campaign – but a mixture of injuries and some poor performances opened the door for Man City to swoop in and win the title.
ARSENAL have been prompted into doing some big business this transfer window and have spent over £200 million already on some fresh talent – with Declan Rice, Jurrien Timber and Kia Havertz all arriving.
WHAT HAS BEEN SAID –
Souness, speaking on Premier League fans’ hopes, views and predictions from the Sky Bet Fan Hope Survey, said: “I don’t think the Premier League is in danger of becoming a one-trick pony. I think Manchester City will be champions again.
“They are the strongest team, they’ve got the best group of players I’ve ever known in the Premier League, because they have the structure right – they have football people making footballing decisions.
“They’ve got a manager [Pep Guardiola] who is vastly experienced and successful. They’ve got the best players – and it’s the best players that win you leagues. I think there will be the same challenger this year as last year – Arsenal will challenge City.
“Arsenal would have won the league if that had a little bit more experience and retained a little bit more belief at difficult times.
‘You look at Arsenal last year, there were no serial winners in their team, when they were way out in front.
“There were those who would not have believed the situation they were in, when they checked the league table on Monday and saw they were 10 points clear.
“Going into that stretch, City just said to themselves, ‘let’s just win this game, and eventually Arsenal will be looking over their shoulder that much, their focus will come off their game’, and that’s exactly what happened – Arsenal bottled it.”
