Arsenal legend opens up and lays into ‘selfish’ Mesut Ozil for this big reason
Mesut Ozil has been branded ‘selfish’ by former Arsenal man Perry Groves for not attending the side’s FA Cup final win over Chelsea.
Ozil is one of the Gunners biggest players and one of the best number tens in world football, when he is on top form. But he has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons over the past 12 months as his performances in an Arsenal shirt have not matched the wages he was given under Arsene Wenger.
It was no secret that Ozil was almost out-of-contract last February before Arsenal gave in and offered him a massive £350,000-a-week deal, especially as they literally just let Alexis Sanchez leave for Manchester United and did not want to lose another big named player.
But since then his performances have been inconsistent and he has been heavily criticised for his work-rate, even being dropped by current boss Mikel Arteta, who barely used him last season.
That has led to speculation in the media suggesting that he will be sold by the club so they can use the funds to land one of their top transfer targets, but it seems that the German has other ideas.
And after having it confirmed that he would not be included in Mikel Arteta’s squad for the final either, Ozil was granted permission by the club to go to Turkey, and Groves has hit out at the German midfielder.
Groves said on talkSPORT’s Final Word: “That just sums him up all over. He’s not bothered about Arsenal, he’s just bothered about himself.
“I wouldn’t want my teammates to think that I was that selfish. So it just means that he knows he’s done with Arsenal.
“[If I was his teammate] I wouldn’t even… Don’t text or WhatsApp me, do you know what I mean?
“If you’re not really bothered, don’t pretend you are.”
Earlier this week, Ozil’s agent, Erkut Sogut, maintained that his client will not be leaving the Emirates this summer.
“I don’t think Mesut will leave before the summer of 2021,” Erkut Sogut told Fanatik.
“He’s got an ongoing contract that hasn’t changed. He will stay with Arsenal.”
Look, we have said it before, Arsenal made a mistake offering Ozil £350,000-a-week because they can not get rid of the man, and he is very happy collecting that wage and sitting on the bench.
