Overmars tells Arsenal to ditch £350,000-a-week Ozil and sign 21-goal replacement Ziyech for bargain price
Arsenal should sell Mesut Ozil and buy Ajax midfielder Hakim Ziyech for half the price, says the Dutch club’s technical director Marc Overmars.
Ozil is one of the Gunners biggest players and one of the best number tens in world football, when he is on top form. But he has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons over the past 12 months as his performances in an Arsenal shirt have not matched the wages he was given under Arsene Wenger.
It was no secret that Ozil was almost out-of-contract last February before Arsenal gave in and offered him a massive £350,000-a-week deal, especially as they literally just let Alexis Sanchez leave for Manchester United and did not want to lose another big named player.
But since then his performances have been inconsistent and he has been heavily criticised for his work-rate, even being dropped by current boss Unai Emery for the big games of the premier League season, with many ultimately claiming that he could be sold this summer.
There has been alot speculation that Unai Emery is seeking to spend a big amount of money and bring in a few more players by August 8th, with Ziyech a name that has been mentioned as a possible arrival at the Emirates.
The 26-year-old has been one of the standout stars of Ajax’s squad this season, weighing in with 21 goals and 24 assists in 49 games from a wide midfield position as he helped Ajax clinch their first League title in five years while also reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League.
He has a reported 35m euro (£31.5m) buy-out clause, with the Gunners actively trying to bring in wingers this summer, and Overmars has told Arsenal to ditch Ozil to try and sign the young man this transfer window.
“I am a bit surprised that it is still so quiet around Hakim,” Overmars told Voetbal International.
“I think he has played better every year and his statistics are exceptionally good. Many clubs are increasingly looking at that.
“They look more at the numbers than at what he shows and what is happening around him. I think Hakim Ziyech is better than Mesut Ozil.
“I would say sell him (Ozil) and you will get Hakim for half. But they (Arsenal) didn’t listen to me. So it could just be that he stays with Ajax.”
Now Arsenal are in need of adding some more creativity and width to their already impressive attack and although many fans want to see some defenders arrive over the next few months, a deal for Ziyech could be a great bit of business.
The Moroccan star has shown great potential over at Ajax and tore Spurs apart in that second leg of the Champions League, which showed that playing even against the best Premier League defenders will not be a problem.
So getting rid of Ozil and replacing him with Ziyech could be a great solution to Emery’s problem with the German next season?
