Forget £50m Umtiti as Arsenal should sign £25 million bargain from rivals Tottenham
Arsenal should forget about a transfer deal for Barcelona star Samuel Umtiti and make a swoop for Tottenham star Toby Alderweireld.
Arsenal are interested in a potential transfer deal for Umtiti as Unai Emery seeks to add some much needed quality to his back-line, especially after the side conceded 51-goal in the Premier League last season.
Emery reportedly believes that he will need to spend most of his money on improving the attack side of the club this coming window having spend most of his transfer kitty on the likes of Sokratis, Bernd Leno, Lucas Torreira and Mateo Guendouzi last summer.
But after recent reports in the media suggested that Umtiti has no intention of leaving Barcelona this summer, despite the rumours linking Matthijs de Ligt will be joining the club, Arsenal should switch their attentions to Alderweireld.
Alderweireld is regarded as one of the finest leaders in Europe right now and has been a big reason why Spurs have been so good under the guidance of Mauricio Pochettino over the past few seasons.
But despite many months of contract talks, Alderweireld has been unable to agree a new contract at Spurs, with many reports suggesting Tottenham Chairman Daniel Levy is unwilling to break the clubs strict wage policy.
And the fact that Emery will only have around £45 million to spend over the next few months, spending £25 million on a player of the quality of Alderweireld would be seen as a great bit of business by the club.
He is a leader, a solid unit and a man that has helped Tottenham become one of the most defensively sound sides in the Premier League, and is just the type of player that Emery would love to have in his squad to get back inside the top four.
So Arsenal should stop worrying about buying players that will need time to adapt to the Premier League, and they should make a move to try and sign one of the best players in the Premier League for a bargain fee.
And the fact Spurs would hate it if Arsenal signed the Belgian, would be an extra bonus.
