Arsenal Wednesday! Emery message, super Ozil and Martial update
Here is the daily roundup from all the latest Arsenal headlines.
Arsenal boss Unai Emery has urged Mesut Ozil to be more consistent after his stunning performance against Leicester on Monday evening.
Arsenal went 1-0 down against Leicester before Ozil stepped up and put in a stunning performance to help the Gunners come out on top and make it ten wins on the spot for Emery’s side, who lost the first two games of the new season under the Spaniard.
Ozil scored one and assisted another two as he looked to hit back at the criticism he ahs received this season for some of his performances in the opening weekends of the season, in which many even called for him to be dropped and then sold when the January transfer window opens up.
After the match against Leicester, pundits and fans alike were smitten by the performance of the German and now boss Emery has urged the midfielder to be more consistent: telling Sky Sports: “Yeah, for Mesut, today was a very good performance, and a very good victory together. And also we are going to push and demand for ourselves and for him also, this regularly. Yeah, it’s very important [to be a leader] in this situation. But we have in the team a lot of players with this capacity.
“I think he [Ozil] can play every match with this commitment and with this quality, [whether he is] captain or not captain.” (Click to read more)
Fresh reports have claimed Arsenal and Tottenham transfer target Anthony Martial now wants to sign a new contract with Manchester United.
Martial has been in the transfer headlines for the last few months with reports he was surplus-to-requirements at Old Trafford as boss Jose Mourinho is fed up of the inconsistent performances of the Frenchman, who can look like a deer lost in the headlights at times.
And that led to speculation that Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino was ready to make a £50 million swoop to try and tempt him into a move to White Hart Lane, but failed to convince United to let him leave for anything less that the £80 million Mourinho wanted.
Arsenal were also linked with a summer move as Unai Emery wanted that one big player that could add something different to his attack, as Danny Welbeck is prone to injuries and Alex Iwobi was very unproductive last season.
However, the Daily Express website has now claimed the relationship between Mourinho and Martial has improved in recent months and the Frenchman is willing to extend his stay at United, and is willing to sit back down with club officials to negotiate a new deal, which could see him earn as much as £175,000-a-week.(Click to read more)
