Mikel Arteta opens up and admits he wants exciting midfielder to stay at Arsenal this summer

Mikel Arteta wants Ainsley Maitland-Niles to stay at the Arsenal, insisting he has faith in the youngster.

Arsenal have one of the best academies in the game and have produced some real classy players over the years, but Maitland-Niles is fed up of not getting the game time that he wants in the first-team, which has got his name in the transfer headlines.

The 22-year-old appears keen to leave the club this summer amid interest from Wolves, who have already made a transfer offer to get a deal done, but Arteta maintains he can be a key part of the future at Arsenal.

“We are reading a lot of news about our players which is not bad that other clubs want him but with Ainsley, he’s a player that I’ve said since I joined that I really like,” said Arteta on TalkSport

“The best way to show that is that I have played him in the most important games of the season and he responded really well, so that’s where we are with the player.

“I am always open to listening to what the player is feeling at every stage of their career and then I can give them my opinion of how I see them, what I expect from them and if we have the right understanding, then we have to move forward together.

“If there is something that doesn’t work then we have to assess it with the player and the club and then find the right decision for both of them.”

Maitland-Niles is a very exciting talent and it would be a shame to leave Arsenal when they are in the middle of handing a number of talents a chance in the side, so it will be interesting to see how this all plays out
