Arteta sends clear transfer message to Newcastle boss Steven Bruce
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has shared his view that Newcastle United is the ‘right place’ for Joe Willock to develop, but has dealt a blow to the Magpies with their attempts to keep the midfielder next season.
Willock has impressed since joining the Magpies on loan back in January – scoring four goals – and Steve Bruce has made no secret of his desire to try and get a permanent deal done in the summer transfer window.
However, it seems Arteta is keen to give the 21-year-old a chance this summer and even though he has admitted that the Toon was the right place for Willock, he is looking to give the attacker a chance next season.
“He has a chance”, Arteta replied when asked whether Willock would be given a chance in pre-season to prove himself.
“He is a player we really like so at the end of the season he will come back here and then we will make the decision again for what is best to move forward.”
In the last four weeks, Willock has scored three crucial goals which have played a vital role in increasing the points gap between Fulham and Newcastle in the fight for Premier League safety.
“No,” Arteta said when asked if he’d been surprised with Willock’s success so far at Newcastle, “because he has got some great qualities, some unique qualities to play in that position.
“He is a real threat in the opponent’s box, physically he can do anything you ask for and has got the right mentality, is good technically and he is English.”
