Blues icon tipped for Chelsea return: backed to amaze
Nicky Butt has backed Frank Lampard to make a sensational return to Chelsea, insisting the Coventry City boss would do an “amazing job” if handed a third spell at Stamford Bridge amid mounting scrutiny on current head coach Liam Rosenior.
The former Manchester United midfielder made his comments as CHELSEA’s inconsistent run of form continues to raise questions over Rosenior’s future. A damaging defeat to Everton and slipping Premier League performances have intensified pressure, with the club’s Champions League hopes now in doubt.
Lampard, currently in charge of Coventry, has rebuilt his managerial reputation in the Championship. The 47-year-old is on the verge of leading the Sky Blues to promotion, with his side sitting comfortably at the top of the table in what has been one of the most impressive campaigns in the division.
Butt believes that progress has transformed Lampard into a far more complete coach than during his previous spells at Chelsea. Speaking publicly, he suggested that a return “wouldn’t be a stupid thing” and argued that the former midfielder is now a “totally different manager” capable of succeeding at the highest level.
Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Butt said: ‘Do you think if Frank Lampard gets promotion with Coventry they could go back in for Frank?
‘He got the job too early the first time I think and he had the transfer embargo so he had to use a lot of young players. It wouldn’t be a stupid thing to go and get Frank Lampard back in charge of CHELSEA for me. He’s done a great job at Coventry.
‘He’s got a bit more experience now and he probably made a few mistakes the first time around. People need to understand that transfer embargo means you have to rely on loads of young players, that must have been difficult for him.
‘He would be a totally different manager now. I think Lampard would find it easier working with better players, it would be easier for him to get his messages across to more technical players.
‘If Frank went back into Chelsea, with all the experience he’s got now, I think he would do an amazing job, I really do.
Why Lampard would be welcomed back
Despite that mixed history, Lampard’s work at Coventry has reshaped perceptions. Guiding a club with fewer resources to the brink of Premier League promotion demonstrates tactical growth, improved man-management, and an ability to build a cohesive team over time.
For CHELSEA supporters, this matters. His first spell was widely viewed as being undertaken under difficult circumstances—most notably a transfer ban that forced reliance on youth. Now, with greater experience and a clearer coaching identity, Lampard appears better equipped for the demands of elite management.
Equally important is his connection to the club’s identity. In an era where Chelsea have cycled through multiple managers, a return for a figure so closely tied to the club’s most successful period could re-establish a sense of continuity and belief among fans.
If Chelsea do decide to make a change, the idea of Lampard returning is no longer driven purely by sentiment.
