Italian legend encourages Man United to get £37M summer deal done
Former England and Italy manager Fabio Capello has suggested that Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee could leave Old Trafford this summer and make a return to Serie A with AC Milan, amid growing uncertainty over the forward’s long-term future in the Premier League.
Zirkzee, who joined United from Bologna in a deal worth around £36m in 2024, has struggled to establish himself as a consistent starter at Old Trafford. Limited game time, combined with modest returns in front of goal, has fuelled increasing speculation that the Dutch international could be moved on as part of a wider summer squad reshaping at the club.
According to recent reports, Capello believes a return to Italy could provide the 24-year-old with the environment needed to rediscover his form, with AC Milan emerging as a leading potential destination. Milan are understood to have tracked Zirkzee since his breakout spell at Bologna, where his technical ability and link-up play made him one of Serie A’s most promising attacking talents.
Manchester United, meanwhile, are said to be open to offers for the striker, with both permanent transfers and structured loan deals being considered as the club evaluates its attacking options ahead of the new season. Zirkzee’s situation is further complicated by increased competition for places, with the club continuing to invest in forward positions and prioritising more consistent goal output.
Interest from Italy is not limited to AC Milan, with several Serie A clubs reportedly monitoring the situation. However, Milan are believed to hold a long-standing admiration for the player and could look to explore a deal if United soften their stance on valuation or consider a loan arrangement with an option or obligation to buy.
‘If I were Milan, I’d make the swap immediately,’ Capello told Gazzetta. ‘I’d see the Dutchman as a much better fit in Max’s 3-5-2.
‘Zirkzee is someone who gets the team playing and is very good at communicating with his teammates.’ Capello continued: ‘For me, the Zirkzee-Pulisic partnership would be brilliant.
‘If Sorloth and either Gimenez or Nkunku were alternatives, one could say the attack is in good shape.’
Capello’s comments add further weight to the growing narrative that Zirkzee’s time in England may be short-lived. The former Milan and England boss has previously been critical of the striker’s adaptation to the Premier League, suggesting that his style may be better suited to the tactical and technical demands of Italian football.
