Legend opens up on Chelsea’s decision to get £34 million transfer deal done

Liverpool icon John Barnes has defended Chelsea over their decision to let Tammy Abraham leave the club and join Roma

With Thomas Tuchel keen to add a world class striker to the squad last summer – the Board decided that a move to bring back Romelu Lukaku to the club would help in tehri quest to win back the Premier League title

Many were expecting big things from the powerful Belgian – -especially after he set the Italian League alight – but he has flopped massively and there is now even talk that the Blues are open to the idea of letting him leave in the transfer window

Abraham on the other-hand has become one of the most deadly strikers in Serie A and has netted an impressive 23-goals on 40-games for Jose Mourinhho’s side, but Despite his impressive record in front of goal in the Premier League and Serie A, Barnes has defended Chelsea’s decision to offload Abraham.

He added: ‘Chelsea didn’t make a mistake by letting Tammy Abraham go, despite the fact he’s scored more than all their strikers combined this season.

‘Abraham wasn’t scoring for Chelsea. Just because a player is doing well elsewhere doesn’t mean a club made a mistake in letting them go.

‘Obviously, the club he’s currently at, Roma just suits him more.

‘Arsenal didn’t make a mistake in moving Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on, just because he’s scored six goals in seven games for Barcelona. It just wasn’t happening for Tammy at Chelsea.’

Chelsea really believed that they were signing one of the best strikers on the planet and keeping hold of Abraham just did not make sense – it was the right decision to let him leave and see how he develops

Many can doubt why the club let him leave – but no-one could have imagined just how deadly he would become and just how massively Lukaku would flop

But can we see him back at Chelsea in the summer? it would take a big decision from the player and Chelsea – but if the money is right and he is told he will be the clubs number one

Why not?
