Frenchman announces headline-taking Chelsea signing ‘is very expensive gamble’

Former Chelsea defender William Gallas believes Enzo Fernandez’s signing is an ‘expensive gamble’ with the midfielder having only played in Europe for six months.

After months and months of transfer speculation – Chelsea decided to break the British transfer record to bring the gifted midfielder to the Premier League for a staggering £106 million.

He has also been signed on a massive eight-and-a-half year contract – which many believe is a staggering amount of money for a player that has done pretty much nothing in the game.

Now – Gallas has opened up and claimed that Fernandez is a very expensive gamble – Speaking to Genting Casino, Gallas said: “Enzo Fernandez is an expensive gamble in my opinion, even if he had a great World Cup and is very young.

“Look at how he was playing with Argentina. He played like a really experienced player. He definitely has the talent and everybody can see that. But it is his first time in the Premier League.

“Nobody knows how he’s going to adapt. Is he going to live up to the level that everyone expects him to be? Sometimes we see clubs just buy players who haven’t proved themselves.

“Nowadays in football after one season, your value can increase. From a club’s standpoint, I think a club should wait to put that price on someone just to be sure. Once you’ve bought that player for over £100m, you need to win trophies with that player in the following years.

“Once you want to sell him, you have to sell him for more than you bought him for. When that doesn’t happen, it becomes a problem.”
