CHELSEA is pleased to confirm defender Alfie Gilchrist has signed a new two-year contract.

The 19-year-old’s credentials at youth level are impressive however, as the defender nominated for the Premier League 2 Player of the Year award last season, and is currently Chelsea U21 captain.

Mauricio Pochettino is aware of his talent, taking Gilchrist on the club’s pre-season tour over the summer, where he played around 75 minutes in the USA, and the Blues have moved quickly in order to get a deal done for the lad.

Chelsea posted on the club website: ‘The centre-back, who is captain of our Under-21s, has agreed a deal until 2025, with the club holding an option for a further year.

‘Gilchrist, a boyhood CHELSEA supporter, joined our Academy as an Under-11 and progressed through the youth ranks at Cobham.

‘He established himself as a regular for our Under-18s during the 2020/21 season, which ended with Gilchrist being named Scholar of the Year and having signed a professional contract.

‘Gilchrist has continued to captain the Under-21s this season under Robinson and was also among the substitutes for our goalless draw against Bournemouth on Sunday.

‘Congratulations, Alfie!’

The lad is a real talent and there were some big clubs keeping a very close eye on his situation at Chelsea, so the Blues must have given him an offer he simply could not refuse.

Now he will be hoping that he gets a chance to shine in that CHELSEA squad in the coming seasons as he wants to make that step up, this new deal shows Chelsea are willing to give him the chance, now lets see if they actually stick to it.
