Striker Giroud opens up and officially reveals why he has agreed to sign with Chelsea

French striker Olivier Giroud has opened up and revealed just why he has decided to stay at Chelsea this season.

There was a lot of transfer speculation in the media over the past few months about the imminent departure of striker Giroud, who has become very unhappy in the Chelsea side this season after falling behind Tammy Abraham in the pecking order.

It seemed that he was all set to depart the club when his contract expired and his contract at the club run out, but Chelsea shocked many fans just a few days ago when they announced that Giroud had committed himself to another 12 months at the Bridge.

After coming close to moving away from the club in the January transfer window, he provides an insight into how things have changed and why he decided to stay.

He told the official website: ‘I was supposed to leave in the January transfer window because I wasn’t playing much and I needed more game time to make the France squad for Euro 2020.

‘I very nearly left the club but I really think that God wanted me to stay at Chelsea.

‘The manager told me that he couldn’t let me leave because he didn’t have anyone to replace me. Everyone knows what happened so I won’t go back over it but the coach spoke to me privately and told me that he’d give more games.

‘He kept his word and what then mattered to me was proving to him that he could count on me when I was called upon.’

It was a massive shock to see that Giroud will be staying at the club, especially with all the transfer speculation surrounding a possible transfer move away. But if this is last 12 months at the club, fans will be hoping that he helps guide Chelsea back into the Champions League.

He may not score many goals for Chelsea, but he adds something to the attack and keeping hold for another season is a very good move from the club.
