Tuchel encouraged to make sure £47M German is a Chelsea player in summer

Former Chelsea boss Glenn Hoddle has warned his old club that selling Timo Werner may end up backfiring in the future, amid all the speculation the German wants out at the end of the season

Werner was one of the most deadly strikers in world football during his time in the Bundesliga and that goal-scoring ability prompted the Blues to make a move and bring him to the Premier League in a deal worth £47 million

However, The German has struggled in front of goal since switching the Bundesliga for the Premier League almost two seasons ago and has largely found himself sitting on the bench or playing out wide under Thomas Tuchel

Having notched 95 goals in 159 games for RB Leipzig, his goal-scoring prowess will still be relatively fresh in the memory of Bundesliga fans, however, with his pace and tireless work rate commanding a £47.5m transfer fee less than two years ago.

Werner has recently admitted that Germany’s tactics suit him better than Thomas Tuchel’s at Chelsea, and it has now been claimed that he is looking to leave Chelsea when the window opens up, with Borussia Dortmund keen.

But amid all the speculation, Hoddle feels he may be worth keeping for one more season. The BT Sport pundit was discussing the striker situation at Stamford Bridge and said: “[Werner] doesn’t look confident in a Chelsea shirt and looks much more at home in Germany.

“He seems to affect the game more from the bench than when he starts. That’s not bad to have someone like that up your sleeve from the bench who you can look upon to change the dimension of the game.

“You’ve got to say it hasn’t worked for him. Will Chelsea wait for another year? I don’t know. Werner is a weird one as you could see him moving to a club slightly below Chelsea, they sell him and he goes on to score a load of goals again. It makes you look stupid.

Look, Werner is a brilliant young striker that should be a superstar for Chelsea, but it has just not worked and honestly, a move away may be the best thing for his career.

Chelsea will be looking to add a new striker to the attack in the summer, so the funds from selling Werner would go towards signing that next big striker for the club
