January upgrade! Sarri told £90 million Icardi ‘would be a good move’ for Chelsea
ESPN FC pundit Paul Mariner says Inter Milan star Icardi would be a clear upgrade on the strikers Chelsea already have.
Chelsea have started the new season in terrific fashion and look like a side that could mount a serious challenge for the Premier League title, if they just add a new defender and goal-scorer to the starting line-up.
And one striker that has been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge is Icardi, who has been scoring goals for fun over in Serie A and already has nine goals to his name this season.
He is regarded as one of the best strikers on the planet right now, and has a £90 million release clause in his contract that Maurizio Sarri is reportedly ready to pay this coming January.
And Mariner believes he would be a step un strikers Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud, telling the ESPN website: “We’ve banded on about Morata, I think what Chelsea are doing is they are exploring their options.
“Can they get Icardi? Will they want to sell him? I wouldn’t want to sell him.
“So would it be a good move? I’m not quite sure. Sarri knows way better than I do whether he would fit into Chelsea and fit into the Premier League.
“He’s a goalscorer, he puts the ball in the back off the net for fun.So, I like Morata, I’ve been banging the drum for him.
“But I’m going to say that would be a good move for Chelsea.”
Is Icardi worth the £90 million Chelsea are prepared to pay?
At 25-years of age, Icardi is yet to come into his prime at Inter and is still developing into one of the best forwards in world football, so he could be a very good long-term investment.
And his goal-scoring at Milan has proved that he would be able to deal with most defenders in the Premier League, so considering Chelsea’s other target Harry Kane would cost around £200 million, he would be a fantastic buy for the club.
