Signed, sealed and officially delighted with Chelsea announcing five-year Kovacic deal has been signed
Chelsea have signed midfielder Mateo Kovacic on a five-year deal from Real Madrid, after deciding to make his move a permanent one.
The Blues have been unable to sign players during this transfer window over the past few months due to their transfer ban, but have been permitted to sign the Croatian star.
Chelsea are able to complete a deal for Kovacic as he was still registered to the club until the end of June following his loan spell, with the club having an option to sign him for £40 million.
And with the club unable to sign any players this summer, Chelsea had no other option but to hand the former Madrid midfielder a permanent move to London.
“I really enjoyed my season on loan with Chelsea, I feel comfortable at the club and like London and the Premier League very much. I am very happy to be able to join permanently,” Kovacic said on the CFC website.
“We had a successful year, winning the Europa League and I hope I can make a big contribution in the coming seasons.”
It would have been interesting to see whether or not Kovacic would have received a contract with the club if Chelsea were able to sign players, but the deal is done now.
Many Chelsea fans will not be hoping that Kovacic puts in more impressive performances for the club that he did last season, especially as he barely influenced much of his 50 games for the club.
Kovacic has the potential to become a top-class midfielder, he just needs the right coach to come in and play him in a more attacking role because defensively he is not that great.
So it will be interesting to see just how develops over the next few seasons at Chelsea because maybe now he is settled at the club could mean that he puts in more of an effort to become the world class midfielder that many tipped him to become as a young teenager.
