Midfielder Kovacic opens up and tells fans goals are coming after signing big five-year Chelsea deal
Former real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic has admitted that he is hoping to score more goals in a Chelsea shirt next season now that Frank Lampard is in charge of the Blues.
The Blues have been unable to sign players during this transfer window over the past few months due to their transfer ban, but have been permitted to sign the Croatian star.
Chelsea are able to complete a deal for Kovacic as he was still registered to the club until the end of June following his loan spell, with the club having an option to sign him for £40 million.
And with the club unable to sign any players this summer, Chelsea had no other option but to hand the former Madrid midfielder a permanent move to London.
However, he incredibly failed to score a single goal across 51 games in all competitions last season, despite helping the club get back inside the top four and winning the Europa League title.
But after agreeing a permanent move to the club, the Croatia international is looking to improve upon that next season and believes he can learn plenty from Lampard, speaking to Chelsea’s website, Kovacic said: ‘I’m looking forward to working with him a lot. He was an amazing player and he showed last season that he is a good coach as well.
‘I’m looking forward to learning how to score from him because he scored quite a lot and me not so much last season! ‘I’m maybe not exactly the same type of midfielder as he was but he had some strong abilities, especially scoring goals.
‘He was a hard worker so I’m looking forward to being better in this aspect, in working hard, fighting on the pitch and scoring goals.’
Kovacic is not the type of player that could score goals for fun on a regular basis like Lampard managed during his playing days at the club, so it would be a surprise to see him break that mould next season considering he will play less games under Lampard this time around.
He only got that contract because of the injury to Ruben Loftus-Cheek and the fact Chelsea cannot buy any players this window, so wit will be interesting to see if he stays at the club next summer.
