Thank you Ruben? Loftus-Cheek reason Chelsea wrapped up massive five-year Kovacic deal
Chelsea decided to hand Mateo Kovacic a deal to stay with the club because of an injury suffered to Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
Kovacic became a permanent fixture in the Chelsea squad last season and made over 50 appearances, as he helped Chelsea get back inside the top four spots and win the Europa league title ahead of Arsenal.
But there was a feeling around the club that they were ready to let him leave this summer, after many believed he had not made the impact that was expected of the midfielder, as he struggled to fully adapt to the English game.
However, the serious injury suffered by Loftus-Cheek at the end of last season meant Chelsea would have been short of options in midfield if Kovacic had not been retained.
And in the end the Blues ultimately decided to offer him a permanent move to the club, which is reportedly worth around £40 million.
Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said on the Chelsea website: “Mateo proved what an accomplished player he is during his season on loan with us and we are delighted to welcome him to the club on a permanent basis.
“He already possesses extensive experience at club and international level and we are sure he will be a big success with Chelsea over the next five years.”
Kovacic may have not been the most exciting of players to watch at Chelsea last season and it is easy to see why many believe the £40 million price tag is far too much for the midfielder, but Chelsea are in this transfer ban and need players to get through their long season next year.
They may not have offered Kovacic a deal if they were able to sign players, but it is done now and he will be a Chelsea player for the foreseeable future.
And if he does not impress once again under Frank Lampard, then he could be one of the first out the door next summer, but it will be very interesting to see if he is able to adapt to the style of play that Lampard likes to employ at the club.
