Smart move! Lampard opens up and announces Premier League winner Drinkwater to be a Chelsea player this summer
Chelsea outcast Danny Drinkwater has been told by new manager Frank Lampard that there could be a way back for him at Stamford Bridge.
Drinkwater, a Premier League winner with Leicester in 2016, did not play a single minute of competitive football for Chelsea last season, with former boss Maurizio Sarri believing that he was not good enough to be included in his side last season.
And that has led to speculation in the media which has suggested that Drinkwater will be allowed to leave the club this summer, with a host of Premier League clubs reportedly interested in trying to get a deal wrapped up.
But new boss Lampard has opened the door for the 29-year-old to return to the fold and promised him a clean slate to prove his worth, especially since the Blues will be unable to buy any players over the course of the next two transfer windows.
And Lampard has promised that he will give all of Chelsea’s fringe players a chance to play their way into his team over the next month.
Lampard said on the Daily Express: “Everybody will have the opportunity to show what they can do. I will be looking at their attitude, the way they play and train, in pre-season and onwards.
“I would be a fool to come here with ideas that I’m going to freeze anybody out, I want to get the best out of the squad.
“Everybody has an opportunity. I have no pre-conceived ideas about anybody. I already have a good knowledge of the squad, but I need to see them over the next month.”
Drinkwater was one of the best midfielders in the Premier League before he signed for Chelsea, so it was a shock to see that he has been unable to hold down a regular starting spot at the club.
But this is another smart decision by Lampard as Drinkwater will add some much needed depth to the squad, which is needed with all the big games that Chelsea have coming ahead in the next 12 months.
Drinkwater may not be in his prime anymore, but the man is still class and could be a good squad member this season.
