Enzo Maresca asks Chelsea board to sign defender – Statement signing to be made?
Incoming boss Enzo Maresca is keen to bolster his defence at Chelsea when he is officially appointed boss of the club -and Barcelona star Ronaldo Araujo is on the list.
Maresca is the man that the Chelsea board feel can take the club forward after Mauricio Pochettino failed to impress as coach of the club last season – and the Italian will be backed in the transfer window.
And The Telegraph report that the 44-year-old will prioritise signing a new goalkeeper as he looks to improve key areas of the squad that is lacking in real quality.
Araujo has been a player that has been linked with a move to the Premier League for the last few seasons and he could once again be on the transfer market if Barcelona make a decision on his future.
While the centre-back has been linked with a move away – the 25-year-old has repeatedly stressed his desire to stay at the Catalan outfit.
But recent reports on Mundo Deportivo, have claimed CHELSEA are keeping a keen eye on the Uruguayan defender for a potential summer move as they believe he could take over as the leader in defence following Thiago Silva’s departure from Stamford Bridge this summer.

If Barcelona make the decision to sell the defender in the Summer window – he would be a brilliant addition to that CHELSEA side – especially now that Thiago Silva has left the club and headed back to Brazilian football.
Maresca will want players that are proven at the very top of the game and he will need the backing of the board if he is to get the players he feels could take the club forward in the coming season.
Araujo would be a great signing for the club that is for sure.
