Chelsea close in on possible striker Mertens deal as superstar all set for Napoli exit?
Reports have claimed that long-term Chelsea target Dries Mertens could be on the verge of leaving Napoli in the coming windows.
Despite their decent start to the new season and the fact they have some of the best creative players in the Premier League, with the likes of Willian, Mateo Kovacic, Jorginho and Mason Mount just a few names to be mentioned, there is a lot of speculation about who Frank Lampard could sign.
The Blues legend and former England International has been unable to sign any players during his first few months of his time back at Chelsea due to their transfer ban, but there is a feeling that they could be able to sign players during the January window, and a number of possible targets have been mentioned in the media.
And one name that has long been linked with a move to the Premier League is that of Mertens.
Mertens is easily regarded as one of the most dangerous strikers in Seria A football after former boss Maurizio Sarri turned him from a winger to a striker a s few years ago, and Chelsea have been keeping a very close eye on his contract issues at the Italian giants.
Now they have been given a huge boost in their chase, as Napoli’s attempts to renew the contract of Belgian striker have hit a stumbling block, Gazzetta dello Sport reports.
The forward shows no inclination to extend his deal with the Neapolitans and is reportedly courting interesting from a number of clubs from around Europe.
Mertens may not be the most powerful of strikers in Europe and is certainly a different type of player to Giroud and Tammy Abraham, but he would fit into the Blues system perfectly as he is a very adaptable forward.
His goal-scoring record is very impressive and he he has the experience to cope with even the toughest of challenges here in the Premier League.
He could be a great signing, especially if Chelsea were able to land him for a bargain price.
