Chelsea still looking to sign brilliant 16-assists star worth £58 million
Simon Phillips reports that Chelsea aren’t yet done when it comes to Nico Williams.
The 21-year-old has banged in seven goals and grabbed 16 assists in 34 appearances for Athletic Bilbao this season across all fronts and is a player that is attracting some of the games biggest clubs.
It is no secret that Enzo Maresca is looking to add some more quality to his CHELSEA attack now that the transfer window is opened up and is keen to bolster his squad with another winger – to help cove injuries etc.
The Athletic recently claimed that the Blues and Arsenal are ready to push ahead with their interest in the Spain star. Barcelona have been the favourites to land Williams but their own financial problems could prohibit them to do so.
However – if you believe the words of Phillips – Chelsea are not done in their chase for Williams this summer – he was quoted on Football.London: “We have also just been told this morning that Chelsea ‘are still there’ for Nico Williams, who is of course a left winger.
:We were also told right after the Olise move failed that we approached Williams and Barcelona to get the conditions of any deal for Williams. So again, none of this makes much sense.
“Sources have said that the Williams to Barcelona move has stalled for now, and a lot like the situation with PSG and Victor Osimhen, Chelsea are now sensing an opportunity to move in. This is one to watch.
“Worth noting that Williams can also play on the right as well, but is predominately a left winger.”
Blues star Marc Cucurella recently admitted that he was trying to convince Nico Williams to make the move to Stamford Bridge – When asked about his impact at the Euros, Cucurella told The Athletic: “It’s a similar case to what I told you about Cole Palmer.
“Without doing too much in the camp, we have created a very good relationship with Nico and in the end, these sorts of players need to feel comfortable and important. What I tell Nico all the time is that he has to do his thing, create whatever goes through his mind, and I’ll be covering his back or doing anything he needs me to.
“I tell him every day he should come to CHELSEA, he would help us a lot! He is more than welcome and he knows that (laughs). But he is so young, he has to decide by himself and with his people, so it’s not time to put too many things in his head.”
