Former Blues winger has Hazard message on new £57 million Chelsea signing Pulisic
Shaun Wright-Philips has told Chelsea that Christian Pulisic has not been signed to replace the departing Eden Hazard.
With Chelsea seeking to do some mid-season transfer business, the Blues managed to beat off the likes of Real Madrid and Liverpool to nail down the services of Pulisic in a deal worth around £57 million.
The American is one of the most highly-rated wingers in the game right now, but Borussia Dortmund were willing to sell after the emergence of England International Jadon Sancho.
Many believe he was signed as the long-tern solution to the Hazard problem, with the Belgian heading to Real Madrid this summer in a deal worth around £88 million.
Hazard has netted an impressive 28-goals this season but has failed to agree a new contract, with some reports even suggesting that the winger had in fact already agreed a summer switch to sign for the Spaniards before the Europa League win.
But Wright-Philips has urged Chelsea fans not to expect Pulisic to replace Hazard, as he was not signed for that reasons.
“I wouldn’t say Pulisic is there to fill Hazard’s boots,” Wright-Phillips said speaking exclusively to 888sport.
“It’s not fair to put that load on him. He’s there to bring another way of playing for Chelsea and he will create his own footprints basically and build his own legacy at the Bridge.
“He is definitely a player the fans will like. In America he is rated very, very highly.”
Maurizio Sarri may not have known that Chelsea had completed a transfer deal for Pulisic, but it could be a blessing in disguise as he could easily fit into the slot that is currently occupied by Hazard.
However, the American needs time to adapt to the quality of the Premier League and Chelsea fans should not expect 20-plus goals a season from him just yet.
So even though he will eventually be a great buy, he needs time to adjust.
