Announcement made as Chelsea confirm defender deal and move has been made!

Roma have confirmed the loan signing of Chelsea defender Davide Zappacosta, after he officially signed a new deal with the Blues.

The Italian defender only signed for Chelsea two seasons ago on transfer deadline day and was hailed as a great signing for former boss Antonio Conte, as he looked to shore up his defence.

He played a big part in the Blues season, featuring in 38 games for the Blues as they only managed a fifth place finish and a shock FA Cup win over Manchester United.

However, he has failed to make much of an impact at the Blues since then and has been linked with a move away from the club for the last few transfer windows, especially as new boss Frank Lampard showed no desire to give him a second chance at the club, despite the fact he cannot buy any new players.

But the Italy international has now joined the Giallorossi on an initial six-month loan deal, which the Serie A giants will have the option to extend in January 2020.

“AS Roma are pleased to confirm the signing of Davide Zappacosta from Chelsea on a temporary deal,” a Roma statement read on their website

“Zappacosta joins the Giallorossi from the English club on an initial six-month loan which runs until January 2020.

“As part of the deal, there is the option to extend the loan until 30 June 2020.”

Before sealing his move to Roma, Zappacosta extended his contract with Chelsea by a further year.

“Davide Zappacosta has signed a one-year extension to his contract at Chelsea and moved to Roma on loan until the end of January,” a statement reads.

“Zappacosta’s 12-month extension takes his contract at Chelsea through to June 2022. Good luck in Rome, Davide!”

Lampard took a look at a number of players that were on the fringes of the club and has clearly decided that Zappacosta was not good enough to play a part in the squad this season, despite the fact a couple of injuries could leave him short at the back.

But Chelsea fans will surely wish Zappacosta the best and will surely thank him for his limited service at the club, it was just a shame that he could not recreate the form which impressed former boss Conte just a few seasons ago.

He can now reignite his career back in the League which made his name.
