Barcelona star tells Chelsea ‘ i hope to have a new club’ in the summer window
Long-term Chelsea target Jasper Cillessen has confirmed that he will be leaving Barcelona at the end of the season.
Cillessen was heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge last summer as the Blues needed an immediate top-class replacement for Thibaut Courtois, who joined Real Madrid.
However, Cillessen was enjoying regular football at the Camp Nou and had no intention of leaving, meaning Chelsea had to switch their attentions of highly-rated Spanish stopper Kepa.
Kepa arrived at Chelsea with a big reputation in the game, which is why Chelsea paid a world record fee to secure a transfer deal which was followed up by a massive seven year contract.
But as Chelsea seek to bolster their goalkeeping situation in the summer window, Cillessen has now opened the door to a potential deal after admitting he is seeking to finally leave Barcelona in the summer.
Despite helping Barcelona to two Copa del Rey titles, the 30-year-old has played second fiddle to Marc-Andre ter Stegen, the club’s no.1 in LaLiga and the Champions League.
Cillessen told Dutch television channel Ziggo Sport: ”First I will go on holiday and then I hope to have a new club where I can play, because I want to play.”
Kepa has done a wonderful job at Chelsea this season and many fans will feel that he has replaced Thibaut Courtois without any real problems.
But he needs competition to keep him on his toes and that means Chelsea will need to splash some cash and bring in a stopper like Cillessen to help take Kepa to that next level.
The Barcelona ace has the quality to be a real addition to the Chelsea side and although he would have to fight for his place in the side, he could be worth the money.
However, the price has to be right.
