Board encouraged to bring £500,000-a-week duo Ramsey and Coady to Newcastle United this January
Former Newcastle defender Warren Barton believes his old club need to sign a “leader” like Conor Coady as they bid to avoid the drop from the Premier League.
The Magpies are set to spend big this January transfer window to increase their chances of saving them from returning to the Championship, as the board know the side is not good enough to stay up right now.
Their first signing so far was £15million man Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid, a deal that many have been shocked with as the England International was playing at a Champions League side and challenging for another La Liga title.
There has been a few more players linked with a move to the Toon, But Barton, who represented Newcastle between 1995 and 2002, has sent his old club transfer instructions he believes the team would benefit from.
He named Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey and Wolves captain Coady as preferred targets this transfer window: “I think they would be aware to start looking in the market again,” Barton told talkSPORT. “It’s not going to be cheap, they’re sweeping the player pool in Benfica, they’re looking around.
“I would go for him [Aaron Ramsey], I think he’s got a point to prove, when I spoke to Gary Speed a long time ago when he [Ramsey] was 21, Speedo said to me ‘He’s a player, don’t worry about him’.
“He has a great attitude, he works hard in training, he wants to be a leader, I think he’s got a driving force. It didn’t work in Italy, he can come back and I think he’ll have a bit of a chip on his shoulder.”
He added:”[Conor Coady] here’s another player.
“I look at someone like him – a leader, organised in the back, versatile.”
There has been alot of players linked with a move to the Toon and fans are getting excited, but the board need to sign players that are not just arriving for money, other wise they are going down
