Chelsea ‘will be adding powerful striker’ to squad in January as £85M star edges towards move
CHELSEA FC is reportedly eyeing Sporting Lisbon’s powerhouse striker, Viktor Gyökeres, as the January transfer window approaches, and he could be the final piece of the puzzle for Enzo Maresca, according to reporter Iomie Stanley.
The Swede, who scored 29 goals in his maiden season, has already notched up 11 in just eight games so far this campaign and there has been alot of speculation in the media that he is one player that Chelsea may look to sign in the January transfer window.
Gyokeres now heading for exit after Amorim departure?
Gyokeres is one of a number of Sporting CP players who could leave the Portuguese club in the wake of Ruben Amorim’s departure, with CHELSEA likely to chase the former Coventry striker once again.
O Jogo reports that Gyokeres’ is “dissatisfied” with the decision of the head coach to depart for Manchester United, as the Portuguese boss was one of the main reasons that he stayed in the summer window.
Why Viktor Gyökeres Could be the Perfect Fit for Chelsea
Stanley told icfootballnews: ‘Viktor Gyökeres has developed into a forceful presence at Sporting Lisbon, known for his combination of physicality, finishing ability, and aerial strength. Chelsea, under Enzo Maresca, has been experimenting with various attacking formations but still lacks a consistent target man who can lead the line effectively. Gyökeres, with his 6’2” frame and skill in holding up play, would provide a classic center-forward option that CHELSEA currently lacks.
‘The Swedish international’s ability to score in high-pressure situations and create space for teammates would add a new dimension to Chelsea’s attack. His high work rate and pressing ability align well with Maresca tactics, which emphasize aggressive pressing and fluid transitions. This could make Gyökeres an ideal fit for Chelsea’s high-tempo game, adding physicality and finesse to their offensive lineup.
What Are Chelsea’s Chances of Signing Gyökeres?
Stanley said: ‘While Chelsea has the financial clout to pursue top talent, Sporting Lisbon won’t be eager to part ways with one of their star players. Having only recently acquired Gyökeres from Coventry City, Sporting will likely set a high price tag on the Swedish striker to ward off interest. However, Chelsea’s recent transfer history shows that the club is willing to pay a premium for players who can contribute to their long-term vision.
‘The timing of the deal will also play a critical role. Chelsea will need to act quickly in January, as other top European clubs may also show interest in Gyökeres, particularly if his form continues to rise. Additionally, Chelsea’s current position in the Premier League could influence the striker’s decision, as he would want to join a club with realistic chances for European competition.
Is Viktor Gyökeres the Right Investment?
Stanley added: ‘While Gyökeres may not have the name recognition of other top-tier strikers, his style of play is perfectly suited for the Premier League, where physicality and endurance are paramount. At 25 years old, Gyökeres is entering his prime, making him an attractive option for Chelsea as they look to build a competitive squad.
‘If CHELSEA can secure Gyökeres, they’ll add a powerful, versatile striker to their lineup—one who could make an immediate impact in the Premier League.’
