Dont just drop Ozil, sell him! Emery told to get rid of £350,000-a-week Arsenal flop
Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has urged Arsenal boss Unai Emery to sell German star Mesut Ozil at the end of the season, as he is a luxury the club do not need.
Signed by former boss Arsene Wenger, Ozil has constantly been in the headlines over the last few years for all the wrong reasons as he has been heavily criticised for his performances in an Arsenal shirt, which have been very unimpressive at times and many expected him to leave in the summer after months of talks resulted in a deal not taking place.
But then Arsenal sold Alexis Sanchez to Manchester United and ozil seized his opportunity to hold Arsenal to ransom and get a nice big £350,000-a-week deal that he didn’t deserve, and one he hasn’t earned since the signing in February.
And after his miserable start to the new season under Emery, there has been even more criticism of the player, and many calls for Ozil to get dropped from the side as he does not fit the style of Emery.
But former Nottingham Forest and Liverpool winger Collymore has gone one further and told Arsenal they need to sell Ozil at the end of the season.
Writing in his Daily Mirror opinion column, Collymore said: “Arsenal should let Mesut Ozil go at the end of the season because he is not the soldier Unai Emery is going to need.
“He requires more than technique from Ozil. Emery needs grinders and grafters. Players with less technique than him but more energy, heart and spirit.
“Ozil has coasted for the last two or three years and so have Arsenal. But Emery will have no intention of doing the same.
“They should sit down with him, shake his hand and say tell him he is a cracking player, but also a luxury player Arsenal can’t afford right now.”
Here is what we think.
If Emery wants to employ a high pressing game at Arsenal, then having Ozil as a regular starter is simply not going to work as the German has no intention of doing more running than he needs too, he is too lazy for that style of football.
Yes on his day he can be world class and look like the best number 10 around, but nine times out of ten he isn’t in the mood and is starting to become a passenger in the Arsenal side, he is literally becoming useless.
But Emery will have a hard time dropping Ozil from his squad this season as they lack quality all over the pitch, but in 12 months time he can easily find a better alternative.
So we agree with Collymore and Emery should sell Ozil, but who wants to take a player that gets paid £350,000-a-week for doing nothing?
