Dortmund CEO announces Sancho ‘had prepared for a change’ amid Manchester United links
Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has claimed Jadon Sancho lost his focus amid links with Manchester United
After emerging as one of the most exciting talents in world football and netting over 20 goals last season for the German outfit, Sancho was heavily linked with a transfer move to Old Trafford.
There were many reports that there were talks between the two clubs, that Sancho was keen to make the move to Old Trafford, and that United did not want to meet the £100 million valuation, which all led to Sancho staying put.
Sancho’s form has dropped significantly since the conclusion of the saga, with the England international only managing to score five goals in 19 appearances for Dortmund in the first half of the 2020-21 campaign, and Watzke thinks talk of a potential move to Old Trafford served to distract a talismanic figure.
“Subconsciously, Jadon had probably already prepared a little for a change,” the Dortmund chief told Kicker. “I think he had at least thought so much about it that he lost his ease. I have found him trying very hard for weeks.”
Watzke added on Sancho’s struggles this season: “The biggest difference is that he used to not think about his next ball action. Now he thinks about it, and the tenth of a second that he misses is often exactly the one in which the opponent is already on his feet.
“The more you try as a creative person, the more difficult it often becomes.”
The transfer speculation would have gone to the young mans head, but at the end of the day, do United need to spend so much money on the lad when they need a striker first?
