Gunners boss Unai Emery sits down and sends Arsenal message after sealing record-breaking transfer deal
Arsenal boss Unai Emery says he will be ‘patient’ with club-record signing Nicolas Pepe.
The winger became the Gunners’ most expensive capture when he joined in a £72million deal from Lille last week, surpassing the £56m they paid for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January 2018.
Pepe become the most sought after attacker in the game after netting 23 goals for Lille last season and was in talks with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United before sealing a move to the Gunners.
But the 24-year-old faces a race to be fit for Arsenal’s Premier League opener with Newcastle this weekend, and Emery refused to confirm whether he will be able to play against the Magpies.
Speaking after Arsenal’s 2-1 pre-season defeat Barcelona on Sunday, Emery said on the Sky Sports website: “Tomorrow, we are going to train together.
“Each day for him [Pepe] and for us is information we can save. We hope he can be [ready] for this match. With him, I want to be patient.
“He is in the same situation as the other players who have been coming in the last days.
“For example, Lucas [Torreira], after one week of training today has his first ten minutes. With Pepe it is the same. It’s better to be training and be working with us.”
Pepe is a top talent, there is no doubt about that and he is a man that has the potential to become a big star for Arsenal, but fans should not expect too much from the lad because he still has a lot of adapting to do before he gets used to the Premier League.
The Premier League is the biggest challenge of his career and he will not be an instant success, and may even take a few years to get to grips with the English game. But if people are patient and don’t criticise his every mistake, the Gunners have a serious player on their hands.
